Few years after the Great War, a man in his prime undertakes with his best friend a perilous Hajj trip to Mecca on foot. He meets other pilgrims on the way, particularly Beh Ag Ansar, a Tuareg of substantial standing in the Hoggar region of southern Algeria, with whom he forges a great friendship. Between Tataouine and Tripoli, while the caravan he joined comes under a severe sandstorm, he falls in love with Tinhinan, a fellow woman traveller. This love simmers and keeps him going all the way to Mecca. While in Mecca, he falls ill. His friends help him to accomplish the Hajj ritual, but unable to wait for him, they leave without him. Over weeks and months, through prayer, he experiences a miracle that brings him back home to his family. But his world turns upside down when he realises that even his closest allies don’t believe in what he had experienced. They urge him not to tell his fellow villagers about it, which means he must invent stories. A bad liar, he contradicts himself repeatedly. That puts him at odds with some of the villagers, particularly those with whom his family has unresolved inheritance issues. As a result, the village community splits into two clans: those supporting him and those not. Life becomes unbearable particularly to his father. He leaves, thus imposing exile on himself to restore peace to his village and his family. He undertakes another perilous journey through the Sahara Desert to find his friend Ag Ansar, a pillar of the Tuareg community around Tamanrasset. During this trip, his religious fervour diminishes. He refrains from asking God Almighty for help. His ex-schoolteacher, Mr Gross, a sympathetic French ‘colon*’, and his experience of travelling on foot in the desert as part of a caravan help him find his way to his friend. He rebuilds his life, discovers peace of mind at last and love too. But this is short lived. Ag Ansar, appalled at the news that the Italians occupying Libya have captured his rebel friend the “Lion of the Desert”, decides to mount a campaign to free him. Our hero has no choice but drop everything and join the campaign.
